Take-home whitening trays are one of the most popular methods of teeth whitening available. This professional treatment can dramatically whiten your teeth and improve your smile. As whitening treatments only work on natural tooth enamel, you may want to consider the replacement of any old fillings, crowns, or other restorations. This replacement will need to occur following bleaching so that the restoration will match the color of your newly whitened teeth.
Many people consider teeth whitening treatments after their teeth have become dull, stained, or discolored due to:
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development)
- Normal wear of the outer tooth enamel
- Medications (such as tetracycline, etc.)
- Smoking and tobacco use
- Consumption of certain foods and beverages (coffee, tea, wine, etc.)
Take home whitening treatments usually involve two appointments with our dentists. During the first, impressions will be taken of your teeth in order to fabricate your custom whitening trays. During your second appointment, we will check the fit of your trays and make any necessary adjustments. Our dentists will provide you with instructions about using and caring for your bleaching trays.
When whitening your teeth, you will apply a special whitening solution to the inside of the trays, and wear them either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for several weeks. It is normal to experience sensitivity during this period. Your tooth sensitivity should subside after you achieve your ideal shade of white and stop bleaching your teeth.
Remember that tooth whitening is not permanent. You will need to touch-up your smile every few years, or more often if you smoke or drink coffee, tea, or wine.
