If abnormal tissues are noticed during the course of your comprehensive exam, our skilled oral surgeon will provide you with oral pathology to identify the type of bacteria in your mouth and determine the exact oral disease in your mouth so that we can begin providing you with an appropriate treatment.  To learn more about oral pathology in San Jose, California, and to make your appointment with our dentist, call AZ Dental at 408-227-6000.

The soft tissue of the mouth is normally lined with mucosa, a special type of skin that appears smooth and pink when healthy.  Changes to this tissue may signal the beginning of a pathologic process, such as oral cancer, geographic tongue, median palatal cyst, or hairy tongue.  Most pathological changes in the oral region are uncomfortable and disfiguring, but not life threatening.

Oral cancer can be life threatening, but also has high chances of successful treatment when diagnosed in the earliest stages.  As it requires a biopsy and analysis to diagnose, seeking immediate treatment when you first notice chances could make the difference between life and death.

If our dentists notice abnormal tissues or cell changes in your mouth during your regular dental exam, we will take a biopsy (tissue sample) from the affected area and send it to a lab for analysis.  When the results are obtained, we can determine which type of treatment will be most beneficial for your needs.

Common treatments for pathological disease include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Diluted hydrogen peroxide
  • Oral surgery
