Gum recession can be difficult to self-diagnose, as it occurs gradually, and often without any obvious symptoms. Signs of gum disease include:
- Exposed tooth roots
- Increasingly sensitive teeth
- A “toothy” smile (teeth that appear too long)
- Halitosis (bad breath)
- Inflammation and bleeding of the gums
Gum recession may be caused by a number of factors, including:
- Periodontal disease
- Overaggressive brushing
- Poor oral hygiene
- Tobacco use
There are many treatments available to help halt your gum recession and restore your oral health. When you meet with our periodontist, we will first determine the cause of gum recession, and then recommend one or more treatments.
If overaggressive brushing is the cause, we will recommend that you use a softer-bristled toothbrush and/or a gentler brushing technique. When poor oral hygiene is contributing to your gum loss, we can offer a thorough dental cleaning, and provide you with additional information on how to properly brush and floss. Periodontal treatments or night guards may be recommended for recession caused by gum disease or teeth grinding.
In cases of more extensive gum recession, you will most likely need to receive gum grafting or another type of oral surgery to correct the damage.
