Your mouth contains dozens of different bacteria at any given time. These bacteria produce acids that inflame your gums and eventually lead to periodontal disease. Pocket reduction surgery is an effective treatment to eliminate bacteria, reducing inflammation and ultimately saving your gums and teeth. The goal of pocket reduction surgery is to:
- Reduce bacterial spread
- Halt bone loss
- Facilitate home care
- Enhance the smile
Prior to your treatment, our dentists will perform a thorough visual and X-ray exam. Our oral surgeon will provide your treatment using a local or general anesthetic. Your gums will be gently pulled back from your teeth, and bacteria and calculus will be removed. Scaling and root planing will generally be required to fully remove the tartar and smooth the roots. In the final stages of your procedure, we will administer an antimicrobial liquid to kill any remaining bacteria a promote healing. Your gums will then be sutured, and the stitches left in place for 5-10 days.
Your gums will be more sensitive than usual following pocket reduction surgery. You should see a significant reduction in pocket depth and a great improvement in the overall condition of your teeth and gums.
