Dentures are removable appliances, designed to closely resemble your natural teeth and enhance your ability to chew, speak, and smile. Both complete and partial dentures work to enhance your overall appearance by supporting the contours of your face. Complete dentures may be recommended when all your teeth are missing. Partial dentures are used when some of your natural teeth still remain. Partial dentures also help prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of place.
Complete dentures, also known as conventional or immediate dentures, are made after the teeth have bene removed and the gum tissue has healed (a 4-6 week process). You will be without teeth during this period. Alternatively, you can elect to receive immediate dentures – which are complete dentures placed immediately following the extraction of your teeth. If you receive immediate dentures, adjustments will need to be made as the tissues shrink and heal.
The process of receiving dentures will require several appointments over a few weeks. Our dentist will take highly accurate impressions and measurements, and there will be several “try-in” appointments to ensure that your dentures are the proper shape, fit, and color.
When you receive dentures, it is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and difficulty with speech and hewing while your muscles and tissue adjust to the dentures. This should subside as your mouth adjusts.
Our dentists will also provide you with precise instructions on caring for your dentures. Please follow them as closely as possible.
