Inlays and onlays are custom restorations made in dental laboratories and permanently cemented to the tooth by your dentist. They are often recommended for:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Decayed teeth
- Fractured fillings
- Large fillings
- Cosmetic enhancement.
These restorations are offered as alternatives to amalgam and composite fillings, and are a more conservative alternative to dental crowns. Inlays and onlays are nearly identical, but onlays are usually used when one or more of the chewing cusps (pointed ends of the tooth) have been affected and need to be included in the restoration.
Inlays and onlays require two appointments to complete. During the first appointment, our dentists will take impressions, and remove any decay or old filling materials in the affected area. The space will be cleaned and prepared, and a temporary filling will be applied while your restoration is completed in a dental lab. During your second appointment, your inlay or onlay will be cemented into placed and checked for a proper fit.
