There are several types of dental bridges available. The most common type of bridge is usually made of porcelain fused to metal, and consists of two crowns that cover anchoring (abutment) teeth, and are attached to one or more artificial teeth, which fills the gap in your smile. When you visit our dentists, we will discuss the various types of bridges and determine which type of dental bridge will be most beneficial to your smile and oral health.
We may recommend a dental bridge to:
- Fill the spaces caused by missing teeth
- Maintain the shape of your face
- Prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of position
- Restore your ability to chew and speak
- Restore your smile
- Upgrade you from a removable partial denture to a permanent appliance
You will require at least two visits with our dentists to receive a dental bridge. You will first be numbed, and the anchoring teeth prepared for crowns by removing a portion of the tooth enamel. An impression will be taken and sent to a dental lab, where your bridge will be created. We will provide you with a temporary bridge to use during the several weeks before your next appointment. When you come in for your second appointment, your permanent bridge will be carefully checked to ensure a good fit, adjusted, and cemented in place.
Dental bridges are highly durable and will last for many years. However, they may eventually need to be replaced or re-cemented due to normal wear.
