Digital radiography (X-rays) uses an electronic sensor to capture and store digital images, allowing our dentist to instantly view them and quickly detect any developing problems. Digital X-rays can reveal many types of dental problems, including:
- Bone loss
- Tooth decay
- Poor tooth and roto positions
- Developmental abnormalities
- Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line
Digital X-rays are completely safe for use, producing 80-90% less radiation than the already-low exposure of traditional film radiography. In addition to being better for your health and safety, they are faster and more comfortable to take, saving you time in our office. Digital X-rays also eliminate harmful waste, as they eliminate the caustic materials needed to develop film.
Our dentists and hygienists will recommend necessary X-rays based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exam, age, risk of disease, and any signs or symptoms we may notice. All new patients should receive a full mouth series of X-rays, which is usually good for 3-5 years. Bitewing X-rays (images of your top and bottom teeth biting together) are taken during your dental checkups.
